The Government of Tamil Nadu vide notification issued in G.O.Ms.No.988,Public(Estt.I&Legisla Department, dt. 07.10.2005, constituted the Tamil Nadu Information Commission consisting of One State Information Commissioner and two State Information Commissioners initially.The strength of the State Information Commissioners were further raised from 2 to 6 in G.O.(Ms)No.72, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, dt.10.04.2008.

      In G.O.(Ms)No.72, Human Resources Management Department, dt. 26.12.2025, the strength of the State Information Commissioners were subsequently raised from 6 to 8, due to increased flow of petitions consequent on the popularization and awareness of Right to Information Act, 2005 among the general Public through training, publicity and other efforts of the Government, in order to reduce the ever-increasing pendency in Tamil Nadu Information Commission and as per the directions of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, Civil Original Jurisdiction, Miscellaneous Application No.1979 of 2019 in W.P.(C) No.436 of 2018.
